  4. Requirements 
  5.  
  6.      You must have Rexx support installed to run this program. Rexx is 
  7.       normally part of the default installation of OS/2. If Rexx is not 
  8.       installed you must go to Selective Install and install support for it 
  9.       there. 
  10.  
  11.      If you don't have the Enhanced E installed on your system you MUST run 
  12.       the install procedure to setup the editors to function properly. This is 
  13.       now required before the program will run. 
  14.  
  15.      This version includes a changed ini file structure that needs to be set 
  16.       up by the install procedure. 
  17.  
  18.  If you haven't done so already unzip the archive in any directory and run 
  19.  "install". You may install to the directory you started the install operation 
  20.  from or key in a new directory to install this program to. The install program 
  21.  will create the directory (1 deep) if needed and copy the files to it. In the 
  22.  interest of avoiding adding to your already long Path statement three files 
  23.  are copied to other directories. The EEE.EXE and EE.EXE files are copied to 
  24.  the \os2 directory and the EEE.HLP file is copied into the \os2\help 
  25.  directory. These files are less than 250k total in size. If you will not be 
  26.  using these editors from the command line, these three files may be deleted 
  27.  from those locations. The uninstall procedure will also remove them if and 
  28.  when you decide to uninstall the editors. 
  29.  
  30.  Notice - If you have a previous version of the Enhanced E installed - 
  31.  Beginning with version .15 there is a new "Vprexx.dll". If you have moved your 
  32.  dlls to another directory, make sure they are replaced with the version 
  33.  included in version .15 or later.

  37.  The Install program also has an uninstall procedure as mentioned previously. 
  38.  The uninstall will:

  40.      Remove any desktop references to the editor(s) you've chosen to uninstall 
  41.      Remove any files it may have placed elsewhere on your drives 
  42.      Remove the chosen editor(s) desktop objects 
  43.  
  44.  After running the "uninstall" you may delete the Enhanced E directory and any 
  45.  files that you may have moved.

  49.  The install routine also gives you a choice of default editors. This item is 
  50.  disabled unless you bypass it at the command line. At this point it only works 
  51.  if the OS/2 System Editor is the only editor on the system. DO NOT use it if 
  52.  your text files have other associations attached to them! If there are no 
  53.  other editors on your system that have an association to "plain text" files 
  54.  the Enhanced E may fill that void just by having an object created. To remedy 
  55.  either situation, there is a neat utility by Henk Kelder called "assoed03.zip" 
  56.  at the PillarSoft site or on Hobbes in "/os2/editors' that will change any 
  57.  associations. 
  58.  
  59.  There are some data files that don't seem to "take" to a different default 
  60.  editor without changing them individually, I am studying this. The default 
  61.  change worked fine on my other machine with only the "E" System Editor 
  62.  installed on it but I can make no garantees. It is not fool proof yet so avoid 
  63.  it and use "assoed03.zip" unless you have alot of guts and are good at fixing 
  64.  messes. BE WARNED! It may negatively affect your system. If you try this 
  65.  please let me know if it works one way or the other. The install program 
  66.  parameter to make it work is "def".

  70.  REMEMBER, the safest way to make the Enhanced E or Enhanced EE the default 
  71.  editor for the time being is to use Henk Kelders "Association Editor".

  74.  the psoft website.

  85. The Enhanced E Editor (EE.EXE, freeware) is much like the OS/2 "E" system 
  86. editor with a few enhancements. Some of the Enhanced E's features are: 
  87.  
  88.      PRINT FILE - Allows you to print the file presently loaded. Why wasn't 
  89.       this included in "E" the OS/2 System Editor? 
  90.  
  91.      PRINT SELECTED - Prints the text that is presently highlighted. This is 
  92.       helpful when you just want to print a small section of a larger file. 
  93.  
  94.      PRINTER SETUP - Allows you to change the settings on the system default 
  95.       printer only. 
  96.  
  97.      POPUP MENU - Right mouse button brings up a menu with all commands. Menu 
  98.       function help tips are also available on the 'tips' bar at the bottom of 
  99.       the window. 
  100.  
  101.      TIME & DATE - Insert Time or Date from menues or hot keys.

  103.      HELP TIPS - As mentioned above. 
  104.  
  105.      FILE NAME - The full path and name of the loaded file is referenced in 
  106.       the titlebar.

  125.  The Enhanced EE Editor (EEE.EXE, commercial product) is has everything the 
  126.  Enhanced E Editor has with a few other improvements. Here are some of it's 
  127.  features. 
  128.  
  129.      PRINTER SETUP - Allows you to choose a printer and change it's properties 
  130.       including printing to a fax program. 
  131.  
  132.      TOOLBAR - One button access to the most often used commands. Toolbar 
  133.       button function help tips are available on the 'tips' bar at the bottom 
  134.       of the window. 
  135.  
  136.      SEARCH BY LINE # - A search dialog that allows you to find a particular 
  137.       line # in a file. Handy for system or compiler errors that are referenced 
  138.       by line number in a file. 
  139.  
  140.      SAVE TRACKING - The EEE Editor knows when you have made changes and 
  141.       haven't saved your file. It will give you the opportunity to save it 
  142.       before opening a new file, starting a new file or exiting the program. 
  143.  
  144.      AUTOSAVE - Set the AutoSave feature "ON" to save your work at specified 1 
  145.       minute intervals from 1 to 60 minutes. 
  146.  
  147.      SAVE SELECTED - Save selected text to a temorary file for later 
  148.       processing. 
  149.  
  150.      OPEN TEMP FILE - Opens temp file created by "Save selected". 
  151.  
  152.      TIME, DATE, NAME & SIG FILE - Insert Time, Date, Name or a Signature file 
  153.       from menues or hot keys.

  166.      FILE HISTORY - One of the really nice features of EEE. The file history 
  167.       tracks the most recently loaded files for quick retrieval. It keeps the 
  168.       last "x" number (user selected) files used in 'most recently loaded' 
  169.       order. The limit will allow you to keep the combobox and ini file from 
  170.       getting too unwieldy. The user can set his own limit in the full version. 
  171.       Really helpful for editing or reading several files in a group. The 
  172.       unregistered version has a built in limit of 10 files. 
  173.  
  174.      MULTIPLE LANGUAGE SUPPORT - Language support for menu items that make the 
  175.       Enhanced EE seem native to your tongue. See "PseeLang.zip" at the 
  176.       PillarSoft page for more information.

  178.      PRESENTATION MODE -  Switches editor to full screen view from the menu or 
  179.       by hot key <Ctrl+p>.

  181.      HTML CODE STRIPPING SUPPORT - Strip html code from files while they are 
  182.       loaded thanks to Otto Raeder's HTM2TXT that plugs right into the Enhanced

  193. Click on "Search" to find help on any particular item. 
  194.  
  195. Most of the controls have a tip on the message bar at the bottom of the screen 
  196. and are otherwise pretty well understood by most experienced computer users. If 
  197. you look down there you'll see the tips as you move your mouse over the menu's 
  198. and buttons. If you don't look down there you'll actually be able to see what 
  199. you're doing and hit the mark most of the time with your mouse clicks.

  202. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.1. Bubble Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  204. BUBBLE HELP 
  205.  
  206. As the mouse passes over the toolbar, textboxes popup to help identify each 
  207. button. This can be toggled on or off from the "Settings" dialog. The bubble 
  208. help boxes close when the mouse returns to the edit window or they time out. If 
  209. the mouse movement is too quick (generally sliding sideways and down) sometimes 
  210. they will not toggle off as they may be to quick for the trap that awaits them. 
  211. In this situation they will still only remain on for a few seconds and then 
  212. toggle off automatically. The bubble help seemed to lose it's bearings during 
  213. testing when there were many resizing events performed back to back. This 
  214. shouldn't occur during normal useage but if it does just maximize the window 
  215. and it should correct itself.

  218. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.2. Changing Colors ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  220. CHANGING COLORS 
  221.  
  222. The color selection utility allows you to choose from a sixteen color palette. 
  223. The utility will show the example text in the colors you choose by clicking on 
  224. a selection from the Foreground and Background listboxes. You may elect to 
  225. "SET" new colors or "Cancel" a color change. Be aware that if you hit the "SET" 
  226. button without choosing new colors the edit window will set to the default 
  227. Black on White mode. 
  228.  
  229.      SET - If you decide to keep a new color selection, click on "Set" and the 
  230.       new selection will be saved. 
  231.  
  232.      APPLY - To preview your selection in the Enhanced EE Editor window click 
  233.       on "Apply". This is sort of the "Free home trial" of color selection. The 
  234.       colors you apply will not "stick" until you click the "Set" button. 
  235.       Choose as many combinations as you like and preview them. 
  236.  
  237.      CANCEL - If you decide you don't want to change, click on "Cancel" and 
  238.       your original colors will be cheerfully refunded. 
  239.  
  240.      HELP - Brings a small popup help panel. 
  241.  
  242.      "I WANT A DIFFERENT COLOR!" - The Enhanced EE Editor will support more 
  243.       (up to 16 million) colors for the background through drag and drop 
  244.       actions from your desktop Color Palette if your monitor/video card will 
  245.       allow it. First choose the text or "ForeGround" color from the built in 
  246.       "EEE Color Palette" then open the "OS/2 System Color Palette", choose or 
  247.       edit a color and drop it on the edit window. The new color will be saved 
  248.       in the ini file. If you change your text or "Foreground" color AFTER 
  249.       dropping from the color palette you'll end up with one of the sixteen 
  250.       base colors and have to re-drag and drop your new background.

  255. CHANGING FONTS 
  256.  
  257. Press the "Font" button on the toolbar or on either menu select "Options", 
  258. "Set", "Set Font" to open the font dialog. Choose your new font from the font 
  259. dialog and click "OK". The new font setting will be saved. Notice that the edit 
  260. field and history combobox can have two different fonts and must be changed 
  261. separately. The history combobox font dialog is accessed from the "Settings" 
  262. dialog.

  267. CHANGING SETTINGS 
  268.  
  269. When the settings dialog opens you will notice that you can toggle the WordWrap 
  270. on/off, set the TabStop, turn AutoSave on/off, set the File History Limit, 
  271. toggle the bubble help, add a name for inserting and find a signature file for 
  272. insert. Notice also that the file statistics (EE only, EEE file stats are in 
  273. the  "Find, by Line#" menu item) are updated as you edit. When finished 
  274. selecting your settings press the exit button and the settings will be in 
  275. effect. 
  276.  
  277.      WORD WRAP - Toggles WordWrap on or off. This may also be toggled from the 
  278.       menu. 
  279.  
  280.      TABSTOP - Sets size of the tab in the editor in characters. 
  281.  
  282.      AUTOSAVE - Toggles AutoSave on/off and sets the interval in minutes 
  283.       between saves. The spin button selects the number of minutes between 
  284.       automatic saves or you can type the number in. It is only enabled when 
  285.       the "AutoSave" checkbox is checked. The light just to the left of the 
  286.       File History combobox will light up during any disk activity the EEE 
  287.       creates. AutoSave is available only in the EEE editor. Be careful using 
  288.       AutoSave, it saves mistakes too... (EEE) 
  289.  
  290.      HISTORY LIMIT - Sets the limit of file names and locations that are 
  291.       tracked in the File History combobox. The limit was installed as a 
  292.       measure against having an ini file with so many names that it degrades 
  293.       loading performance and creates a huge unusable combobox. Set it to suit 
  294.       your taste and cpu. The shareware version of EEE has a built in limit of 
  295.       10 History Files stored the full version has no limit. (EEE) 
  296.  
  297.      HISTORY FONT - Opens the font dialog to set a new font for the History 
  298.       combobox. (EEE) 
  299.  
  300.      NAME - Enter the name to be used for "Insert - Name" (EEE) 
  301.  
  302.      SIG FILE - Enter the full path to the signature file to be used for 
  303.       "Options - Insert - Sig File..." or click on "Browse" to locate one. 
  304.       (EEE) 
  305.  
  306.      BUBBLE HELP - As the mouse passes over the toolbar, textboxes popup to 
  307.       help identify each button. This setting toggles bubble help "On" or 
  308.       "Off". (EEE)

  310.      CONFIRMATIONS - Confirm Save; Toggles save confirmation On/Off. Confirm 
  311.       Close; Toggles confirmation when exiting the editor On/Off. Changed file; 
  312.       Toggles save confirmation of changed file when exiting On/Off. If toggled 
  313.       off the editor will save a changed file automatically for a quick, no 
  314.       confirm, saving exit.

  319. SEARCH BY KEYWORD OR LINE # (EEE only) 
  320.  
  321. Searches in documents can take on two forms. 
  322.  
  323. SEARCH BY KEYWORD - The search dialog for text lets you key in a word in the 
  324. "Find" field and if desired the "Change to" field allows you to change the 
  325. search word by confirming the change or by electing to change all instances of 
  326. the word from the present cursor position to the end of the document. Once the 
  327. search stops on the object word of its' search you can "Cancel" to end the 
  328. search or click "Find" again to search for the next instance of the word in 
  329. question. 
  330.  
  331. SEARCH BY LINE # - The search dialog for "Line #" searches shows you the number 
  332. of characters in the file and the number of lines. In the Enhanced EE a line is 
  333. defined as a string of characters located on the same row as opposed to a 
  334. string that ends in a carraige return/line feed pair. If you turn off the 
  335. wordwrap you can see just how long a true line can actually get in some cases. 
  336. The spin button will only allow you to choose a legal line #. You may also key 
  337. in any legal number in the spin button field. When the selection is made click 
  338. on "Goto Line #" to search or "Cancel" to close the dialog without a search.

  344. PRESENTATION MODE 
  345.  
  346. One of the truely neat things about IBM's WebExplorer was its' Presentation 
  347. Mode. I used it all the time, It was so nice to sit and read without so much 
  348. clutter all around. I only wish Netscape had thought to do the same. The 
  349. Enhanced EE Editor is equipted with a presentation mode that takes the edit 
  350. window to the full extents of your screen. It's not flashy, there is nothing 
  351. else to see, BUT... there is no clutter, just the text loaded in the editor. 
  352. You can still do almost everything you could do from the main window but all 
  353. commands go through the popup menu or the Hot keys. Just right click anywhere 
  354. on the screen for the popup. You can toggle the presentation mode on & off with 
  355. the "Control+p" key combination or from the menues.

  358. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.7. Multiple Language Support ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  360. MULTIPLE LANGUAGE SUPPORT 
  361.  
  362. Beginning with Beta v.11 the Enhanced E's offer multiple language support. At 
  363. this point only the menu items and bubble help text can be changed. The editors 
  364. look each time they start for a file called "LANGUAGE". If the file exists then 
  365. it is read into a stem variable and the menu items are updated with their new 
  366. names. There is a template for translation available at the PillarSoft website 
  367. called PseeLang.zip. It has about 65 commands to interpet. If you decide to try 
  368. it, let me know of the outcome.

  371. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.8. Html Stripping Support ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  372.  
  373. HTML CODE STRIPPING SUPPORT 
  374.  
  375. Stripping html code is easy right from the desktop once you plug in HTM2TXT. 
  376. The htm2txt1.zip file can be downloaded from the PillarSoft site, Hobbes or any 
  377. of the usual OS/2 FTP sites. Just copy the "Htm2TxT.cmd" file into the Enhanced 
  378. E directory and the Enhanced E's will do the rest. Load any html (or htm) file 
  379. and click "Strip Html" or hit the hot key "Ctrl+h". The red light beside the 
  380. history list will glow while Htm2Txt is quietly working. Be aware that a large 
  381. file will take a few seconds to be processed. The TXT version of the file will 
  382. be saved with the original html files' name and a ".txt" extention in the 
  383. original files' directory.

  385. Htm2Txt has command line options if you want to investigate it further. The 
  386. editor sends commands that limit it to processing only the object file but it 
  387. will allow chaining of any files mentioned in the object htm file plus a few 
  388. other little goodies. 
  389.  
  390. Otto Raeder, the writer of Htm2Txt, has done a real nice job with this utility. 
  391. It would have taken alot of work to do what he has done so rather than reinvent 
  392. the wheel I asked Otto if I could include his code in this editor. He 
  393. graciously said "Go for it" but rather than do it that way (I'd feel like a kid 
  394. cheating on an exam!) I decided just to make the Enhanced EE work with it like 
  395. a plugin so I won't be inadvertantly taking credit for his work. He distributes 
  396. it freely and I would like to say thank you anyway to Otto, and thanks from the 
  397. OS/2 community for all your work.

  399. In keeping with the free nature of Otto's work the HTM2TXT command file has 
  400. been incorporated into the freeware version of the Enhanced E also. Hopefully 
  401. this combo will get alot of good, hard use out of the users of OS/2.

  404. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3.9. Drag and Drop ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  406. DRAG AND DROP 
  407.  
  408. The Enhanced E's now support; 
  409.  
  410.      Dropping text files onto the desktop icon to start the editor with the 
  411.       selected text file loaded. 
  412.  
  413.      Dropping text files on the edit window while the editor is running. When 
  414.       a file is dropped on the edit window you will be asked if you wish to 
  415.       save the previously loaded file before the newly dropped file is loaded. 
  416.       The editors will only accept complete "plain text" files that physically 
  417.       exist somewhere on your drive. 
  418.  
  419.      Dropping text from other locations inside the edit window. 
  420.  
  421.  You may now also drag selected (highlighted) text to; 
  422.  
  423.      Another editor or application that accepts dropped text. 
  424.  
  425.      The printer object. Makes sending a file to a different printer or fax 
  426.       easier than changing to another driver. With the file loaded just click 
  427.       on "Select All" and drag the file to your selected printer object. 
  428.  
  429.      The desktop to save snippets of information in temporary files. Each file 
  430.       dropped on the desktop gets a unique temporary name (up to one thousand 
  431.       unique names) that you can rename whatever you please. TIP: An easy way 
  432.       to rename icons (and the filename with it) is to hold down the <alt> key 
  433.       while left clicking the mouse on the icon. After editing the title, click 
  434.       the mouse elsewhere on the desktop to close the icons' entry field and 
  435.       save the new name. 
  436.  
  437.      Another location inside the edit window to "Move" text from place to 
  438.       place or to "Copy" text (by holding the <Control> key down while 
  439.       dragging) to another location in the editing field.

  446. FILE CHAR COUNT - Located in the "Settings"(EE) or the "Find - by 
  447. Line#..."(EEE) dialog the total number of characters in the currently loaded 
  448. file is displayed. 
  449.  
  450. FILE LINE COUNT - Also located in the "Settings"(EE) or the "Find - by 
  451. Line#..."(EEE) dialog the total number of lines in the currently loaded file 
  452. are displayed. Notice that if the file uses long lines you may have to set 
  453. WordWrap "off" to find the correct line referenced by a compiler error comment 
  454. etc. 
  455.  
  456. The <Ctrl>+<Home> key combination will take you to the top of the file. 
  457.  
  458. The <Ctrl>+<End> key combination will take you to the end of the file. 
  459.  
  460. This program was done with the monitor set to 1024x768 mode and the toolbar 
  461. icons may be to large for 640 mode, they may have to be revamped to a smaller 
  462. icon. Feedback? 
  463.  
  464. There is a known problem with loading files that have a space in the path or 
  465. filename. We are working on a solution to this but as of yet do not have a 
  466. satisfactory method to implement.

  853.      Did you use the install program? Try running it and see if that solves 
  854.       your problems. 
  855.  
  856.      If things still aren't working right try running install from the 
  857.       editors' home directory then choose "uninstall" then run install again 
  858.       and choose "update" or "new install". "Update" will recreate the system 
  859.       settings for the editors chosen. "New Install" will update system 
  860.       settings and recreate the folder and icons. Be sure the install directory 
  861.       information box has the correct directory entered. 
  862.  
  863.      If the install program chokes with an error message that says "routine 
  864.       not found" the most likely cause is a dll conflict with another program. 
  865.       The easiest way to overcome this is to reboot and run the install program 
  866.       before running anything else that may using the "rexxutil.dll" functions. 
  867.       The install program will unload any functions it loads upon its' 
  868.       completion. 
  869.  
  870.      Is there a dot as the first entry of your LIBPATH statement in the 
  871.       config.sys? example - LIBPATH=.;C:\OS2; This tells OS/2 to check the home 
  872.       directory first. 
  873.  
  874.      Did you copy over ALL the old files if you had the Enhanced E installed 
  875.       previously? With version .17 a new "Vprexx.dll" was introduced. Some 
  876.       features will not work without this new dll. 
  877.  
  878.  All files for the Enhanced E's must reside in the installed directory with the 
  879.  following exceptions: 
  880.  
  881.      The DLL files can be moved to the \os2\dll directory or to a directory 
  882.       that you have setup in your path for "user.dll's" if you prefer but 
  883.       shouldn't need to be moved. If you have more than one copy of a 
  884.       particular dll, put the newest one in os2/dll or a user/dll directory to 
  885.       save disk space. Before deleting the older dll, make sure all your 
  886.       programs work with the newer one. 
  887.  
  888.      In order to use the Enhanced E's from the command line, OS/2 needs to 
  889.       know where they are. Rather than adding to your already LONG Path 
  890.       statement or adding an environment variable etc. The two files EE.EXE & 
  891.       EEE.EXE are copied to your \OS2 directory. They are small and the effect 
  892.       on your freespace will hardly be noticeable. If you do not forsee 
  893.       yourself using them from the command line just delete them from the \OS2 
  894.       directory to regain 200k. The uninstall will also remove these files. 
  895.  
  896.      This help file is copied into the \OS2\HELP directory so it is available 
  897.       if you use the editors from the command line. If you do not forsee 
  898.       yourself using them from the command line you may delete the help file 
  899.       from the \OS2\HELP directory to regain 50k. The uninstall will also 
  900.       remove this file. The help file can also be moved if desired to any 
  901.       directory listed in the SET HELP statement in your config.sys.
